There is a new robot in town. And by town I mean Baghdad. The SWORD (“Special Weapons Observation Remote Reconnaissance Direct Action Systems”) weapons were designed as a modification of the already existing Bomb-Disposal Units that are already deployed. However this is the first of its kind that is armed with a weapon.
Three SWORDS have been sent to Iraq but have yet to fire a single shot. Thank god. Once again we have decided to arm a robot with a large gun, in this case an M249 machine gun. Go ahead and send in a robot armed with a m249 machine gun but have a solder with an even bigger gun right behind it in case it malfunctions. My vote is that until a hand held electromagnetic pulse weapon is invented than we shouldn’t risk it.
